Infraestruturas de Portugal National Greenways Plan was created in 2001 with the purpose of requalifying and reusing non-operating railway tracks and paths in some areas of the North, Centre and Alentejo regions.

The implementation of the Plan has been supported by contractual agreements with the municipalities which are crossed by these non-operating railway tracks and paths, with IP Património being responsible for promoting the development of Preliminary Studies of Landscaping Projects that are then used as the basis for the construction project for each Greenway.

This experience went through the adoption and registration of the National and European Brand (ECOPISTAS), as well as the integration of Infraestruturas de Portugal as a member of the European Association of Greenways.
